Zonal fare system
How the fare is calculated

The regional territory is divided into fare zones. The price is calculated based on the number of zones travelled through to connect the departure locality with the destination locality.

The local public transport area served by Start Romagna, in line with the rest of the region, is divided into 84 zones.

Zones are identified by a 3-digit code, which always starts with:

  • 7 for the Ravenna basin
  • 8 for the Forlì/Cesena basin
  • 9 for the Rimini basin.

Each bus stop sign shows the zone where the stop is located, so you can easily check both your departure and arrival zones (destination stop).

A few simple rules

The zonal fare system is based on a few simple rules that apply to all three basins and to all Start Romagna travel passes (single tickets, multi-ride tickets, monthly and annual season passes).

1
Whenever you buy a travel pass, you must clearly know the departure zone and the arrival zone of your journey.
2
If, to reach the arrival zone, you pass through other zones, you must count all the zones travelled through – including both the departure and arrival zones – to determine the correct fare.
3
Any so-called “neutral” zone is not counted for fare calculation purposes.
4
If there are several possible routes between the departure and arrival zones, each passing through a different number of zones, the fare applied will be that of the shortest route. However, the travel pass purchased will also be valid on the longer route, that is, for a higher number of zones than those printed on the pass.
5
Within the departure zone and the arrival zone, you can freely use all service types (urban, coastal, interurban) within the time validity of the travel pass, as long as your route is entirely within those zones.
6
For time-based tickets, in addition to the number of zones, you must also consider the time validity of the travel pass: in general, the more zones you travel through, the more time you have to complete your journey. On single and multi-ride tickets, the time validity is printed on the front of the ticket.
